    A Brief History of Keller

Keller is a Tarrant County suburb north of Fort Worth Texas.  Keller’s motto is “Successfully balancing big-city comforts with small-town charm.” In 2017 the population of Keller was estimated to be over 44,000; which would make Keller the seventy-fourth largest city in the state. Keller has developed into a mostly residential city. There are 11 parks including 24 miles of biking and hiking trails. Keller became incorporated in November of 1955.

In the 1840’s and 50’s, settlers were originally attracted to an area just north of present Keller that became known as ‘Double Springs’. In 1848, Samuel Needham sold Isaac Roberts 640 acres of land for only $200. The land contained not only the settlement of Double Springs, but also the site of what would eventually become Keller. The Mount Gilead Baptist Church was established in 1850. In 1859, it is said that the church was burned in a raid by an Indian tribe. The building was rebuilt however and served as the area’s only school until the early part of the twentieth century.

By the early 1870’s the area had developed a blacksmith shop, cotton gin, grist mill, and a few stores. In 1875, AG Roberts sold a right of way to Texas and Pacific railroad. The first train passed through town in 1881 upon completion of a line between Fort Worth and Texarkana. The new rail line allowed Keller to prosper as an agricultural hub. Around 1882, H.W. Wood gave 40 acres to the community for a town site that was to have been known as “Athol”. The streets of the original area still carry the names designated in 1881. The North-south streets are Elm, Lamar, and Main. The East-west streets are Bates, Hill, Olive, Pecan, Price, Taylor, and Vine.

The traditional telling of the town’s history says that the townspeople agreed to re-name the town after a Texas Pacific Employee named “Keller”; if the railroad would establish a stop in the town. A post office was established as Keller in 1888. It is said that cemetery records of Mount Gilead indicate a strong Scots, Irish, and English contingents among the early settlers.

Keller contains more than 420 acres of open spaces and parks including Bear Creek Park, Bursey Ranch Park, Johnson Road Park, Keller Sports Park, Keller Veterans Memorial Park, Northeast Park, Overton Ridge Park, and Willis Cove Nature Area. Hiking trails can be found at the Brentwood Trail, Meandering Trail, and Shady Grove Green-walk. Keller arranges a number of festivals and event specials throughout the year. City facilities: include the Keller Public Library, Keller Senior Activities Center, Keller Town Hall, Municipal Service Center, and the city’s renowned “Keller Pointe” aquatic center.

In 2009, Money Magazine rated Keller the seventh best places to live in the United States. In 2008, the U.S. Census Bureau listed Keller as the fifty-ninth richest city in the country (median household income = $114,542.) Keller’s neighbor Southlake was ranked number one in the same Census Bureau list.
