Is there a difference between an Office 365 subscription plan and a conventional retail store purchase?
With an Office 365 subscription plan you receive the both the installed Office applications and web versions too: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, and Access (Publisher and Access are available on PC only). You can install Office 365 to many different types of devices, including PCs, laptops, tablets, and phones. With Office 365 you also get bonuses like on-line storage with OneDrive, Skype video conferencing, and additional Outlook security. Lastly, you will always have access to the latest software when your subscription is active.
Purchasing Office (in the conventional retail store sense) generally includes programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for use on a single PC. When purchased in the retail sense, the applications will not automatically update to the latest releases. To acquire the latest release, one must generally buy another retail copy of Office after a new version has been released. Office as a retail or one-time purchase does not include any of the internet based services bundled with Office 365.
Will Office be the same both on a PC and mobile phone?
Not exactly. Most of the features should be there, but Office applications are customized for the varied types of devices available.
Do I still own and control my documents after getting an Office 365 subscription?
Yes. Any document you create fully belongs to you. You can still store them on your PC or in your personal OneDrive storage.

How can I be certain my PC can run Microsoft Office?
Microsoft Office is supported on any PC or laptop with a Windows 7 or later operating system. Most modern mobile devices with a common operating system will also run Office.
Are documents I create using Office 365 or Office 2016 compatible with earlier versions of Office?
Yes. Users with any of the following will be able to open your documents without making changes to their system: Office 2007, Office 2010, Office 365, Office 2013, and Office 2016. Compatibility packs are also available for some other older versions of Office.
Must I have Internet access for Office to work?
Internet access is necessary for the original download, install, and activation of both the retail Office suites and all Office 365 plans. Internet access is required when manage your subscription preferences, or when installing Office on other PCs, or to change preferences regarding billing, etc. If you have documents stored exclusively in Microsoft OneDrive, and haven’t yet installed the desktop program for One Drive you would need Internet access to view these documents. Connecting to the Internet frequently will also help keep your installed version of the Office apps up to date with the latest security or general updates. With an office subscription, connecting to the Internet at least once a month is of course required to retain full program functionality.
Is a Microsoft account required to try or purchase Office?
Your Microsoft account is used to sign in to on line services like Office 365, OneDrive, Windows Store, and Hotmail. You already have a Microsoft account if you have used any of these services, or often creating a new account may be necessary. Purchasing Office 365 requires logging in with a Microsoft account. Signing in with this account is required to use certain functions, including Skype and OneDrive storage.
